IOCCP-Activities: Ocean Acidification

We would like to let you know that applications are still accepted for the Third Winter School on Ocean Acidification and Multiple Stressors hosted by OA-ICC in Monaco from 24 November to 5 December. This two-week training course will provide participating scientists with a thorough understanding about key concepts and experimental design used to study the impacts of ocean acidification in the context of additional stressors.

During the OA Week on 18-22 November, the ocean biogeochemistry community will have a great opportunity to discuss the most challenging issues around ocean acidification. This year we’d like to specifically encourage you to participate in a community discussion on “Building capacity in physical chemistry for oceanography: how to address the emerging skills gaps”.

We are thrilled to inform you that the schedule for the upcoming OA Week 2023 is now available at http://www.goa-on.org/webinars/OaWeek2023/webinar.php This online event will take place from 30 October to 3 November 2023 and is designed to provide a platform for the ocean acidification community from across the world to exchange their latest findings through thematic sessions, plenary presentations and community engagement activities.

We would like to bring your specific attention to three sessions focused on issues closest to IOCCP mission:

• the "Sensors Session", planned for the first day of the OA Week, co-moderated by IOCCP Co-Chair Dr Kim Currie. During this session, you will hear from IOCCP SSG members: Dr Véronique Garçon (IOCCP Co-Chair), Dr Dariia Atamanchuk, and Dr Adrienne Sutton, among other speakers.

Building resilience in the production and distribution of CO₂-in-seawater Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) continues to be an issue for the global marine carbon community because there is a single source of reference materials for total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, and pH in seawater and a calibrated HCl titrant for seawater alkalinity analysis (A. Dickson Laboratory, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, USA). On 16 September 2021, as part of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) Week, IOCCP contributed to a dedicated session "Community Discussion around CO₂-in-seawater CRMs."

On behalf of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) we would like to let you know that the Ocean Acidification Week 2021 is just around the corner (Monday 13 September - Friday 17 September, 2021). This year, GOA-ON's virtual OA Week includes 5 plenary sessions, updates from each regional hub, and many community discussion sessions. The full program can be viewed from here.

IOCCP is heavily engaged in shaping the community vision and recommendations for sustained marine biogeochemistry and integrated ocean observations for the next decade. With the OceanObs'19 Conference just around the corner, we encourage you to take a look at a number of Community White Papers already published in the special issue of Frontiers in Marine Science. There you can read about the proposed future ocean governance models, lessons learnt from implementing the Framework for Ocean Observing, but also about challenges and recommendations from the GOA-ON, SOCONET, ARGO networks or the time series community. Please see below for a list of full references to these papers. The list will be updated as new relevant white papers get published.

On behalf of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) we are excited to announce that the GOA-ON Implementation Strategy was officially launched at the 4^th GOA-ON International Workshop, held in Hangzhou, China on 14-17 April. This document outlines how to implement the GOA-ON Requirements and Governance Plan, including expanding ocean acidification observations, closing human and technology capacity gaps, connecting scientists regionally and globally, and informing about the impacts of ocean acidification. The aim is to provide guidance that will allow for comparability across the Network, while considering the potentially different requirements and impediments of regions. The Implementation Strategy also offers practical information prompting members to approach GOA-ON’s goals.

We are happy to let you know that the 4^th Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) International Workshop (http://www.goa-on2019.com/en/index.html) will be held in Hangzhou, China from 14 to 17 April 2019. The Workshop, co-sponsored by IOCCP, will bring together scientists from around the world to discuss emerging aspects from the coupled effects of ocean acidification with multi-stressors, review global ocean acidification status and forecast capabilities, and explore opportunities for capacity development. The workshop is consisted of various events to facilitate an open, multi-level and comprehensive communication and exchanges among participants. There will be invited keynotes, selected oral presentations at plenary sessions, accepted oral presentations at parallel sessions, poster sessions, special events, and summaries organized in a three-and-a half day program. In addition, the Organizing Committee will host several activities to foster a relaxing atmosphere for participants, including ice-breaker, workshop banquet, and city tour by night. IOCCP is co-chairing the session on "Observing ocean and coastal acidification and the impacts on organisms and ecosystems", one of the four thematic sessions of the workshop.

Deadline for abstract submission is 10 January 2019. Travel grant award applications are due by 31 January 2019.

The Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO invite you to take part in a survey on ocean acidification research and observation data. Your answers to this survey will help trace where ocean acidification data is being collected, and where it is stored and served, to facilitate reporting on one of the indicators of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, 'Life below water'. SDG14 Target 3 on ocean acidification calls to 'minimize and address the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels'. IOC-UNESCO is the custodian agency for the Indicator 14.3.1, which is used to measure the progress made to achieve the target. With the support from GOA-ON, and other experts in the field of ocean acidification, IOC-UNESCO has developed the SDG Indicator 14.3.1 Methodology 'average marine acidity (pH) measured at agreed suite of representative sampling stations'. The Methodology provides the necessary guidance on which variables to report, how to conduct ocean acidification measurements and on how to report the collected information in a transparent and traceable manner.

We would like to let you know that during its 51^st Executive Council Meeting in July 2018, the Member States of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO welcomed the Methodology for the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target Indicator 14.3.1. The SDG Target Indicator 14.3.1 calls for "average marine acidity measured at an agreed suite of representative sampling stations". The Methodology provides guidance to scientists and countries about how to carry out measurements following the best practices established by experts in the ocean acidification community, including members of the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) and IOCCP, and explains how to report the collected information.
