Whether we aim to disentangle anthropogenic driven trends from natural variability or we want to assess and improve our ocean model’s capabilities to correctly display changes in time, all require high-quality observational data from multiple fixed time-series data. Until now access to these data was difficult, time-consuming, and often required solving multiple data challenges before these data were fit for the purpose. Following the successful examples set by well-known ocean synthesis products, the idea for SPOTS – the Synthesis Product for Ocean Time-Series – was born from this need to address these challenges.

Efficacy, timeliness and impact of the coordination and communication services we provide depends to a large degree on the willingness and availability of experts in our community to lead thematic elements of our portfolio. This is a voluntary service which, more often than not, demands engagement outside of working hours, outside of working days and sometimes outside of the direct expertise of those providing it. These Heroes need to be recognized and properly acknowledged, therefore in this message we would like to inform you about a few recent changes in the composition of the IOCCP Panel and Office. We take this opportunity to thank those rotating off and to welcome those assuming new roles.

On behalf of the GLODAP Reference Group, and hundreds of seagoing oceanographers who tirelessly have collected data all over the ocean, we are happy to announce the publication of GLODAPv2.2023.
The Global Ocean Data Analysis Project (GLODAP) data product provides access to quality controlled surface to bottom ocean biogeochemical data, with an emphasis on seawater inorganic carbon. GLODAPv2.2023 is an update of the previous version, with 23 additional cruises and includes measurements from more than 1.4 million water samples from the global oceans collected on 1108 cruises. The data for the 13 core variables have undergone extensive quality control, especially systematic evaluation of bias. The data are available in two formats: (i) as submitted by the data originator but updated to WOCE exchange format and (ii) as a merged data product with adjustments applied to minimize bias.
More details about GLODAP background as well as the v2.2023 release poster can be found here.
