  • Gordon Research Conference on Ocean Biogeochemistry, Hong Kong, China, 12-17 June 2016
  • Gordon Research Conference on Ocean Biogeochemistry, Hong Kong, China, 12-17 June 2016

Application for the 1st Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Ocean Biogeochemistry is now open. The conference will be held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 12-17 June 2016. The topic will be The Biologically-Driven Ocean Carbon Pumps.

The deadline for submitting online applications is May 15, 2016.

    Meeting Description

The first GRC on Ocean Biogeochemistry is devoted to the biologically-driven ocean carbon pumps. In future years, the Conference will address the cycles of various chemical elements that are involved in different aspects of life (including N, P, O, Fe, Si, Ca), play active roles in climate (including C, S, N), and participate in the long-term storage of carbon (including C, Ca, Si). It will consider the continuum between the past, present, and future ocean; explore observational, experimental, and modeling approaches; address the neritic, oceanic, and deep environments in the water column, and the sea bottom below; discuss the roles of photosynthetic, chemosynthetic, and heterotrophic organisms; and tackle both fundamental questions and environmental problems of concern to society.

By bringing together the international community of marine biogeochemists, the Conference will provide a unique, international forum for the development of ocean biogeochemistry, and thus become the cradle for novel ideas.

The Meeting is divided into 9 thematic sessions, 1 to 2 per day:

    • The Ocean Carbon Pumps: From Ancient to Future Oceans
    • The Biological Carbon Pump
    • The Carbonate Pump
    • The Microbial Pump and the Roles of Microbes
    • Iron and Other Trace Metals: Roles in Carbon Pumps
    • Silicon, Nitrogen and Phosphorus: Roles in Carbon Pumps
    • Methane and Sulfur: Roles in Carbon Pumps
    • Interactions Among the Three Ocean Carbon Pumps
    • The Ocean Carbon Pumps and Society

Detailed meeting program is on the Conference website.

    Application and Registration

Please note that one must first fill the electronic application form on the conference website (Meeting Links -> Online Application) before being invited to register.

The total number of participants is limited to less than 200. Potential participants are invited to apply as soon as possible. The Conference is open to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers at all stages of their careers.

The IOCCP promotes the development of a global network of ocean carbon observations for research through technical coordination and communication services, international agreements on standards and methods, and advocacy and links to the global observing systems. The IOCCP is co-sponsored by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. Read more…
