  • Call for nominations to the Scientific Steering Committee of the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS)
  • Call for nominations to the Scientific Steering Committee of the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS)

The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) invite nominations of qualified individuals to serve on the Scientific Steering Committee of the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS). This call is for Scientific Members, with terms starting at the annual SSC meeting (Hangzhou, China, 6-9 May 2018). Nominations from experts in carbon, biogeochemistry and ecosystems are encouraged.

The deadline for nominations is 1st February 2018.

    About SOOS SSC

SOOS activities are overseen by the international SOOS Scientific Steering Committee (SSC). The SSC meets annually and provides scientific direction for the SOOS towards achieving its mission. The SSC comprises 4 organisational levels: The Executive Committee (Co-Chairs, Vice Chairs and Executive Officer), Scientific Members, Data Committee Co-Chairs, and Ex-officio representatives.

The SOOS Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) is responsible for guiding and advocating for the implementation of SOOS, in alignment with the SOOS 5-Year Implementation Plan.

Scientific members are selected for their scientific excellence and standing in a field of Southern Ocean science that is relevant to at least one of the SOOS scientific themes. Members are also selected for their connection to, and representation of a SOOS-relevant community or program. Further, SOOS objectives are multidisciplinary and integrated, thus members need to have interests in developing and planning of system-scale implementation strategies, beyond their core scientific interests.

    About the nomination process

In this round, we particularly encourage nominations from females, who are significantly underrepresented on the current SSC. In addition to this, nominations from experts in carbon, biogeochemistry and ecosystems are encouraged.

To submit a nomination (including self-nominations), please provide the following documentation to Louise Newman (newman[at]soos.aq) by the 1st February 2018:

    • 1) A completed Nominee Details form
    • 2) Nomination letter (if not self-nominated)
    • 3) A support letter from a 3rd party
    • 4) A letter of intent by the nominee

For further information on this call, please visit http://soos.aq/about-us/ssc/nominations, or contact the Executive Officer, Louise Newman (newman[at]soos.aq).
