It was great to host the 21st Session of the IOCCP Scientific Steering Group - Global Ocean Observing System Biogeochemistry Panel of Experts at the Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot, Poland.

Lots of great discussions and some really concrete actions were planned during plenary and breakout sessions held between 27 and 30 October 2026. We left Sopot with a draft IOCCP Action Plan for 2027–2030, which when finalised will guide our coordination activities towards addressing critical knowledge gaps and priority research questions as identified by the SSG Experts. Actions already planned include:

  • As recommended during the Ocean Carbon Observing Design Workshop held in June 2026, working with key vessel operators and end users to implement a modest, carefully targeted improvement in surface ocean carbon sampling, significantly impacting the accuracy of reconstructed ocean carbon uptake (stay tuned for a more comprehensive write-up of the Workshop coming out later this week).
  • Running a series of regional scoping workshops in key areas including Southeast Asia and South America to strengthen regional carbon and biogeochemistry observing networks.
  • Hosting a side-event at the ICDC12 Conference in summer 2026 to build a land and ocean coalition to narrow our uncertainty in the size of the ‘coastal offset’ at the global scale and thus contribute to addressing the model-data mismatch in estimates of ocean carbon uptake in the Global Carbon Budget.
  • Planning and implementing the  Ocean Interior Observing Design Workshop aimed at determining how to optimally blend interior observations from diverse platforms to estimate changes in ocean carbon storage over decadal timescales.

We hope for fruitful partnerships across the community when implementing our Action Plan over the next four years.

As usual, we would like to thank our sponsors: Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research, Global Ocean Observing System, and Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences, and all the funding agencies supporting IOCCP SSG Experts.
