The European Integrated Carbon Observation System Research Infrastructure (ICOS RI), an organisation of eight founding member countries and 100 greenhouse gases measuring stations aimed at quantifying and understanding the greenhouse gas balance of the Europe and neighbouring regions, will hold its 2^nd Science Conference in Helsinki, Finland, on 27-29 September, 2016. The 2016 ICOS Science Conference will gather scientists from all over the world to discuss the timely topics in the greenhouse gas research, biogeochemical cycles, climate change and future research challenges after COP21.

We would like to draw your attention to CommOCEAN 2016 - the 2^nd International Marine Science Communication conference & high-level training workshop, to be held in Bruges and Ostend (Belgium) from 6 till 8 December 2016. The organisers encourage the submission of abstracts from all areas of science communication with a special focus on the ocean, marine and estuarine realm.

Abstracts for posters, oral presentations or a 1-hour workshop can be submitted until 1 June 2016 at the latest. Registration will also open on 1 June 2016.

We would like to let you know that the Spring issue of the Ocean Carbon & Biogeochemistry (OCB) newsletter is now available for download here. This issue features two articles from the international partner program IMBER (Integrated Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research), including an overview of the new IMBER Science Plan and Implementation Strategy (SPIS), with the hope of inspiring new collaborations in the coming years.

The 2^nd International Workshop on Air-Sea Gas Fluxes: Progress and Future Prospects, will be held at IFREMER in Brest, France, on 6-9 September 2016. This is a highly interdisciplinary workshop aimed at bringing the multiple communities (e.g. in situ, remote sensing and modelling) studying air-sea exchange and gas fluxes together to present and discuss recent advances, and common aims, goals and challenges.

The Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) seeks community input guiding its development and, specifically, to inform the 3^rd GOA-ON Science Workshop in Hobart in May 2016. The community's feedback is sought via a short survey available at http://goo.gl/forms/qAu5bYBSsJ. The survey considers two topics: 1) updates to the GOA-ON map - an interactive representation of OA platforms and observing activities (including biogeochemical sensors), and 2) biological observations that can be used to monitor the impact from OA. Survey respondents can choose to fill out only the sections they find relevant.

The IMDIS 2016 Conference will focus on various existing systems for on-line access to data, meta-data and products, communication standards, adapted technology, and operating procedures to ensure platforms interoperability. Sessions will focus on infrastructures, technologies and services for a wide suite of users: environmental authorities, research, schools, universities, etc.

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) has scheduled a Modern Observational Oceanography summer course for July 4 - July 22, 2016. The course integrates lectures, laboratory training, and fieldwork to introduce students to current research questions and the observational methods used to investigate them. Themes will include carbon and nutrient cycling, carbonate chemistry and ocean acidification, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and the spatial/temporal scales of physical ocean processes. This course is open to senior undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in oceanography programs. 

The BIOS summer course application deadline is April 17th, 2016.

We would like to inform you about a new global synthesis product of seafloor surficial carbonate, which follows early work by Archer (1996). To interface with climate and circulation models, ocean substrates data have been gridded from dbSEABED (Information Integration System for Marine Substrates) at the global scale, at a 1/10° resolution. The new mapping suggests lower carbonate contents overall than mapped in earlier works. This may affect modeled budgets for earth-system carbon dioxide and outcomes for ocean acidification.
